FAQ
General
Filmclub.app allows anyone to invite their friends and set up a film club online. Club members take turns picking films for the group, watching films in their own time, rate and review each film, and ultimately can compete to get the highest ratings in the club.
Filmclub.app was created by Michael and Tycho, two friends who have been in a film club for a few years now, and who wanted to share the fun of that experience more widely. We do not have any funding or big corporate backing, this is very much a labor of love!
Currently we're in public alpha, and are providing the service completely free of charge. If we find there's enough interest in the service, we may consider different monetisation options, but our aim is to make this service as accessible as possible for people to enjoy.
We're aiming to implement a number of additional features, and looking to set up a blog soon to track what we're working on.
Setting up a club
To set up a club, you'll first need to register and activate your account. Once you've done this, you'll be able to view your account Home page. This is where you can click on 'Create a club' to start the process of creating a new club. A club will not become active until at least one more person joins.
To join a club, you'll need to register and activate your account first. In order to join an existing club, the club admin will need to invite you using the email address you used to create your account. Once you've been invited, you will be able to see your club invitation on the Home page once you login.
The club admin can add or remove members on the club settings page at any time. Please note however, that a club will become inactive if it's down to one member, and will not reactivate until you have at least two members again.
Yes, you can create and/or join as many clubs as you like during our public alpha!
Changing club features (deadlines, name, etc.)
If for whatever reason the group would like the currently selected film to be changed to a different one, the club admin can remove the current pick, and allow the current picker to pick a different film.
If you would like to change the deadline for watching the current film, the admin of the group can extend the deadline under club settings.
The deadline timer is set to start from midnight of the day a film is picked. This is to avoid awkward deadlines in the middle of the day for group members. Because of this, you may see the initial timer have a few additional hours in its countdown.
Unfortunately, we currently do not support changing usernames.
The club admin can change the name of the club under club settings.
To adjust what emails you receive, just head over to your user settings. and choose which notifications you'd like to switch off.
Leaving clubs or deleting accounts
If the admin or creator of a club leaves, the admin rights will automatically be transferred to another club member. If you want to rejoin the club, that member will have to invite you back in.
Sorry to see you go! To delete your account, you can go to your user settings and click on 'Deactivate my account' under the Account Management category.
When you delete your account, you'll be removed from all of your clubs, and all of your ratings and reviews will be anonymised or deleted, so don't make this decision lightly.
Feedback or troubleshooting
Thanks for sharing! You can submit your feedback through our feedback form. We can't guarantee that we'll implement every change suggested of course, but will review each submission seriously.
